Another week of doctors’ strikes across Spain, 13 wildfires rage over the weekend, Spain kicks off World Cup with match against Cape Verde and more news on Monday June 15th.

Another week of doctors’ strikes across Spain

Public healthcare doctors are returning to strike action this Monday in a new week of nationwide stoppages, the fifth called this year by unions to show to oppose new regulations which they argue worsen their work conditions.

The Strike Committee has called for work stoppages and demonstrations in various regions between Monday June 15th and Friday 19th.

The main demonstration will take place today in front of the Ministry of Health in Madrid.

As has been the case before, minimum services in the ER will be guaranteed, but many appointments with medical specialists will be cancelled.

Biggest income gap ever between Spain’s pensioners and youngsters

Young people’s average earnings are being exceeded by pensioners in Spain, and the gap between the two age groups is the widest ever recorded.

This is according to the Bank of Spain’s latest Household Finance Survey published in April and is not unprecedented. It happened once before in 2017.

The data shows that people aged between 65 and 74 in Spain earn around €32,000 a year, €1,000 more than those under 35.

Wildfire season begins in Spain

A total of 13 wildfires that broke out this weekend threatened several areas across the country on Sunday, burning hundreds of hectares and forcing the evacuation of numerous residents.

The most concerning situation is in Galicia , where two fires have already burned 400 hectares, and in Catalonia, where three fires are currently burning.

Spain kicks off World Cup with match against Cape Verde

European champions Spain launch their quest for a second World Cup crown in Group H against Cape Verde, the 2,500-1 outsiders from the Atlantic archipelago who are making their first appearance in the World Cup.

Spain are regarded as one of the favourites for this year’s World Cup, boasting a squad bristling with talent that defeated England in the final of the European Championship in Germany two years ago.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente did little to dampen the expectation surrounding his players on Sunday, confidently describing his squad as the best in the tournament.

The match begins at 6pm Madrid time.

With additional reporting by AFP.
