Oklahoma’s offense goes as Mateer goes, and the redshirt senior showed exactly why in the season opener, completing 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-0 rout of UTEP before the Sooners turned to their reserves. Now he faces a Michigan defense that survived its own opener, a 13-12 escape against Western Michigan that came down to a final-play touchdown. Mateer’s command of Ben Arbuckle’s offense, including his mobility as a runner, gives Oklahoma an edge against a Wolverines defense that was tested far more than the box score suggests. If Mateer plays efficiently again, the Sooners should control the tempo in Ann Arbor.
Sategna emerged as a weapon in Oklahoma’s opening blowout, hauling in 76 receiving yards as one of Mateer’s top targets. That kind of vertical threat matters against a Michigan secondary that had to survive a nailbiter in Week 1 rather than cruise. If Sategna can consistently win one-on-one matchups outside, it stretches the field and takes pressure off Oklahoma’s run game, forcing Michigan to choose between staying disciplined in coverage or crowding the box. A big day from Sategna would go a long way toward keeping the Wolverines’ defense off balance in front of a loud home crowd.
Michigan needs more from Underwood than it got in Week 1, when the sophomore completed just 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception, though he did punch in a rushing score that set up the eventual game-winning finish against Western Michigan. Now he draws Oklahoma, a team that dismantled UTEP by 51 points behind its own quarterback’s clean, efficient outing. With new quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. in his corner, Underwood’s growth curve is the story to watch in Ann Arbor. If he can protect the ball and extend plays with his legs against Oklahoma’s front, Michigan has a real chance in a game its defense alone may not be able to win.
Few players enter a game with more momentum than Buchanan, who caught a 47-yard Hail Mary as time expired to beat Western Michigan and finished the opener with 126 receiving yards and a touchdown. That kind of production makes him Underwood’s clear top target heading into a much tougher test against Oklahoma. The Sooners’ defense will be far more prepared for the deep ball than Western Michigan was, so Buchanan’s ability to win contested catches and create after the catch could determine whether Michigan’s passing game keeps pace. A strong showing from Buchanan gives Michigan a chance to trade blows with Oklahoma’s high-powered attack.
