US labour market: More jobs add excitement to upcoming FOMC meeting
US payrolls increased by 162,000 in August, driven by seasonal factors, indicating a robust underlying labour market. Job gains broadened across industries, with prior data having been revised upwards and unemployment holding at 4.1%. This stronger report has increased uncertainty ahead of the Fed’s September meeting, strengthening the focus on upcoming inflation data.
US job growth in August came as a massive surprise, as the economy added 162,000 jobs, adjusted for seasonal factors. The unusually low seasonal adjustment this year compared to August 2025 almost entirely explains the large positive surprise. According to initial estimates, seasonality boosted job growth in August 2025 by 178,000, whereas the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) assumed that seasonality had only added 8,000 jobs this year. The result is fairly high job growth, adjusted for seasonal factors. Aside from these statistical technicalities, the underlying trend of the August job reports was quite robust. The drop in payrolls in July was revised to a moderate increase of +21,000, bringing the net two-month revision to +55,000. The proportion of industries adding jobs increased to 55.6%, with cyclical industries, such as construction and manufacturing, adding jobs, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.1%. An alternative measure of labour market slack also points to a low unemployment rate. The solid labour market report has generated considerable excitement in anticipation of the forthcoming FOMC meeting on 16 September. With only 12 days to go, the probabilities implied by Fed Funds futures pricing have shifted to 40% for no change and 60% for a 25-basis-point hike. Prior to the labour market report and following dovish remarks by Fed Governor Waller on 3 September, the implied probabilities were 50-50. As the Fed is much more concerned about inflation than the labour market, we will pay close attention to the August inflation report on 11 September, which will be released before the FOMC meeting that will determine the course of US monetary policy. We expect the inflation trend excluding energy to decline, enabling the Fed to hold rates unchanged once more. However, any positive surprise in next week’s inflation reading would significantly increase the odds of a rate hike and necessitate a revision of our projection of an unchanged policy rate in the US.
